Donna Lee Hellmann

I turn research into stories people actually want to watch. I’m a professional writer with more than 18 years of experience transforming complex subjects and extensive research into clear, compelling stories. I’m also the creator and writer behind Surreal Echoes, a documentary-style YouTube channel exploring American culture, nostalgia, entertainment, and consumer behavior, combining deep research with storytelling designed specifically for YouTube. I don’t write blog posts disguised as scripts. I write for the viewer. That means thinking beyond the opening hook to retention, curiosity, pacing, narrative progression, emotional investment, strategic reveals, and strong transitions. My 18+ years as a professional writer also give me extensive experience in finance, business, and education. I’m particularly strong at taking complicated or research-heavy subjects and making them intelligent, accessible, and entertaining without talking down to the audience. My YouTube specialties include: Documentaries and video essays | Business and corporate stories | Brand histories | Rise-and-fall stories | Pop culture | Nostalgia | True crime | Finance and economics | History | Explainers | Educational entertainment Whether you provide detailed research or simply give me a topic, I can take a project from research and story development through outline and finished script.
